What time can you start shooting doves?
Shoot time for doves is one half hour before sunrise to sunset. All hunters — including junior hunters — are required to carry their hunting license with them. Hunters must have written permission from the landowner prior to hunting on private land.
What time do dove start flying?
Doves usually fly from their night roost to a watering hole shortly after dawn, then quickly move to feeding areas where they stay until midday. They loaf at perching, watering or graveling sites near the feeding area for an hour or two around noon, then return to the feeding area for the remainder of the afternoon.
What time of day are doves most active?
4 DON’T CHASE AWAY DOVES Birds are most active in early morning or late afternoon, but consider taking it easy and giving the birds a break by ending your hunt by about 5 p.m. If you don’t have a limit by then, too bad.
Where should you aim for dove hunting?
The Butt, Belly, Beak System of Aiming dictates that the hunter starts to swing his shotgun, coming from behind the bird, past the butt, belly and beak of the dove, and continuing to swing as he or she pulls the trigger.
Is dove hunting better in the morning or evening?
▶ The best shooting is during those times when the birds are flying between roosting and feeding areas. In the morning, that’s generally between 8 and 10, and in the evening from 5:30 until about 7.
Does rain affect dove hunting?
My experiences have been, if it’s a light rain, it will be fine and even good. If it’s a heavy rain, stay home or go and lower your expectations.
Can you drink beer while dove hunting?
In a 3 hour dove hunt you could have about 2 beers per hour and be fine. However at the same time drunks and guns do not mix.
What month is dove season?
This year’s season for mourning dove, white-winged dove, spotted dove and ringed turtle dove will run from Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Tuesday, Sept. 15 statewide, followed by a second hunt period, Saturday, Nov. 14 through Monday, Dec. 28.
What choke should I use for dove hunting?
For most shooters, a skeet choke is best for early season doves and an improved-cylinder choke is second best. If you shoot a two-barreled shotgun, it’s hard to beat skeet for the first shot and improved-cylinder for the follow-up.
How far can you shoot a dove?
Most doves are shot anywhere between 20 and 40 yards, but don’t test a gun at 40 yards if you take all your shots at half that distance. I use a 4-foot-square piece of cardboard, Birchwood Casey’s goalpost-shaped target stand, and 36-inch-wide rolls of brown paper.
How many dove decoys should I use?
The key is not how many dove decoys are set out, but how and where. Try spacing out four or five decoys or double up a pair or two. It has been my experience that it is often more effective to position decoys in separate pairs, rather than in groups. Doves on the ground often travel in pairs.
How do you attract doves?
More Tips for Attracting Doves
Provide a dusting or sunning area for doves to use, such as a wide deck railing or a bare patch of ground in a quiet place where they can feel secure. Discourage feral cats and other predators that may prey on doves, and take steps to protect backyard birds from hawks.
Is Camo necessary for dove hunting?
Wear camouflage or drab clothing and avoid movement: Blaze orange hunting apparel has its place in hunting, but not dove hunting. A tan or olive-colored outfit is just about as good as camouflage clothing, but no matter what you wear, be sure to also avoid moving when a bird or flock is in view.
Is a 12 or 20 gauge better for dove hunting?
More people shoot 12–gauge shotguns than anything else, but a 12–gauge is hardly necessary for doves. If you hunt everything, including waterfowl and turkeys, with one shotgun, 12–gauge is the way to go. Otherwise, 20–gauge is more fun and still effective.
What is the best gun for dove hunting?
Guns and Loads for Doves
A good all-around choice is a 20-, 16- or 12-gauge autoloader with screw-in choke tubes. Pumps, double-barrels and over-and-under shotguns work fine, but because doves are fast and difficult to hit, many hunters prefer autoloaders, which allow three quick shots before a bird gets out of range.
